What to do if someone dies

The death of someone close to you, however prepared you are, can cause you to experience many different emotions. It is often the first time you have had to deal with death, and the following is designed to help you at this time:

1. Call the GP (during out-of-hours, use the emergency number).
2. The doctor will attend as soon as possible and confirm death. He will be able to issue a death certificate if he is able to confirm the cause of death if the deceased has been seen within the last 14 days by a doctor. The certificate can be picked up at Grove House from 10.30am the next working day. The doctor will advise when you can contact a funeral director of your choice http://....uper-active/. Sometimes a doctor is unable to state the cause of death, in which case the death is referred to the coroner to establish the cause of death beyond reasonable doubt.
3. When the death certificate has been issued, either by the GP or the Coroner, you can then register the death at the Registrar of Births, Marriages and Deaths at either Bognor or Chichester by appointment.
4. Funeral arrangements can be proceeded with only after the death certificate has been registered by the registrar.
